Confession Note

An anonymous wall of paper notes: pin a confession, read everyone else’s, and watch every note fade until it is gone after seven days.

Confession Note: the blank note to write on, the wall of pinned confessions fading with age, and the paper colours

About the project

A wall anyone can write on without saying who they are. A visitor writes up to 280 characters, picks one of five papers and pins the note among everyone else’s; each note yellows and grows fainter as it ages and is gone after seven days, so the wall never becomes an archive. There are no accounts and nothing is stored but the words, the paper colour and the time. The hard part was that the database key sits in the page for anyone to copy, so the database itself decides what a stranger may do: read notes younger than a week and pin a new one, never edit, delete or backdate. Those rules are proved from outside with the public key, and a real browser types and pins a note, in 28 checks that run against the live site. A note pinned on one device appears on every other open page in about half a second, over a live socket. It is plain HTML, CSS and one script, with no framework and no build step.
