Brick Builder: the finished 75192 Millennium Falcon, all 7,562 pieces, rendered in the browser

About the project

A browser builder for the biggest LEGO set of its time. The model is a fan-made 3D replica of the 75192 Millennium Falcon from Mecabricks, and everything around it is generated: a Python converter cuts the 17 bags into 1,489 steps the way a printed booklet would, placing each piece only once something it sits on is already built, so after the very first piece nothing is ever placed in mid-air, and identical sub-assemblies like the six landing feet are built together as ×6. Mecabricks’ own part meshes may not be redistributed, so every one of the 425 part shapes is swapped for its LDraw equivalent, found and lined up automatically by fitting surfaces in all 24 orientations and refining the posed minifig parts with ICP. There are three ways to build, switchable at any time: click to advance, pick & place with a tray of parts that snap in, and a free-build sandbox with every part in every colour. The whole ship renders at 60 fps with Three.js instancing, about 13 million triangles in 770 draw calls.
